The ICT Professional in Africa- Career Development What is it like to grow as an ICT professional in Africa? No one can provide you a better idea than those are doing the job on a daily basis in different parts of Africa. Here is the first in a series of interviews with ICT professionals based in Africa. Jean Claude Twite is a Wireless (Microwave) Engineer with UNHCR Dakar, Senegal. He has been been in this field for over 10 years. This interview was conducted when he came over to Lagos, Nigeria for the High Value Hands-ON VSAT Training. Jidaw.com asked him about his views on career development as it relates to competence in Wireless and Telecom technologies. He brings his wealth of experience from the various computing and Telecom environments in which he has worked. His answers provide valuable insight into what it takes to work in the ICT profession in Africa.
What is your area of ICT specialization? And how long have you been doing this job? How would you describe yourself? >> Senior Telecommunication operator, UNHCR Dakar, Wireless (Microwave). 10 years in UNHCR.
What are your overall responsibilities, day-to-day responsibilities? >> I am currently in charge of UNHCR Radio
Network, Installations of VHF & HF radios as well as programming,
Training of UNHCR staff in the use of Telecommunications equipments. Assist users in troubleshooting for group wide and others wireless components. What systems, technology do you work with? >> PA MA, VSAT, Novell Group wise What technical skills, certifications, language, tools, database, Operating systems are required? >> Network+, A+, Server, CCNA. MCSE
Aside from technical skills, what other important attributes, do you need for the job? >> I need to be up to date and to be able to learn and to be able to train others in the area of my duties.
How long have you been working in ICT and how did you get started? >> It's been 10 years since I joined UNHCR in Telecomms & IT department
What do you find unique about ICT vis-à-vis other professions? What do you find most interesting about you work, profession? >>
ICT is challenging and is growing very fast and is very important in many professions. All most every year, there
are new innovations and you must be on the track, thereby necessitating training.
What do you consider the most challenging part of your job? >>
To assist users in troubleshooting has been the most challenging part.
It is my duty to solve such problems. Sometime it take me time and I have to do some research in my books to get some insight to achieve a task.
No full stop in ICT. What are your future plans in the ICT? >>
I want to learn more and more in the area of VSAT and to become a professional Installer so that I can establish my own business.
What is the Career path leading to this profession? What advice will you give somebody who's starting out in this profession? >>
Knowledge is power. I am confident that professional training organized by many leading companies
would be an asset as well as working experience. You can't achieve this unless you have a good motivation and that is my advice for those who are starting in this field. Comments on the VSAT Training you attended >> I was satisfied with Look Angle calculation, frequency Calculation, site survey. I feel proud that I attended the training. I have learn a lot and I'm quite sure that I got the solid basics knowledge of VSAT Network.
